France previously hosted the J80 Worlds on 3 occasions:
- 2003 in La Rochelle (55 participants)
- 2007 in La Trinité Sur Mer (125 participants)
- 2013 in Marseille (117 participants)
The record number of participants is currently held by the Royal Ocean Club of Santander (Spain) which, in 2009 attracted no less than 131 participants.
Les Sables d’Olonne – in the wake of the ‘Vendée Globe’ IMOCAs, the Class 40 series, the Mini 6,50 (the Azores return race), the Figaro one-designs (single handed circuit), and of the Diam 24 trimarans (Tour de France) – is now ready to welcome 120 one-design J80s.
The 17th J/80 World Championship will be raced from the 9th to the 13th July 2017 by teams representing some 10 countries. Crews will be competing on technical courses set in the Bay of Les Sables facing the main beach, so that residents and holydaymakers may enjoy watching the high profile races from the shore.
